Ledigos to Sahagun

LEDIGOS TO SAHAGUN
I think our albergue was an old hacienda. There were beds everywhere and we ended up getting put in a huge loft with single beds that squeaked and threatened to collapse everytime you moved. And one bathroom for a lot of people. This was us collapsed on our beds after our 25km day.
The sun is coming up on little Ledigos.
Street art even in the little towns.
Door decoration.

Knight made of metal pieces. Mainly car parts, wrenches etc.
We are under 400 km.
More of the Meseta.
Medieval way marker.
Hobbits?
I think this may be the liquor I tried the other night.
Someone went to a lot of trouble to knit flags of a lot of countries.
That way. Yellow arrows are what you look for to direct you on the Camino.
Nice path. This stuff is lovely to walk on
We were right beside the highway on the border of Palencia and Leon provinces. Whenever there is something like this or a cross, people leave momentos around them.
Crossing into Leon.

Just outside of Sahagun is the monument to mark the halfway point of the Camino Frances between St Jean Pied de Port and Santiago. This medieval bridge crosses over to it.
Bernardo Seriedad one of the founders of Sahagun.
Alphonso VI the brave. Protector and promoter of The Way of St James. 1065-1109.
Entering Sahagun there was lots of street art. I believe there have been 7 different art competitions over the years. Two artists are chosen. This one was dedicated to Beun Camino.
The following ones represent the movie The Way. Much of it was filmed in this area in 2009 and starred Martin Sheen. I haven't seen it yet but plan to watch it when I get home with my family.
Another interesting sculpture.
We commented on the new front but old back.
Winner of the second competition. A salute to farming and peasant women.

Beun Camino
The symbol of the Camino Peregrino.
We had to go up to Santuario de la Peregrina for our half way certicate. It was built in 1257 and used as a convent, church and a pilgrims hospital. There is a legend that says a piligrim wanted to quit the Camino but a vision of Our Lady kept appearing to him and when he arrived the Statue was exactly like his vision.
There has been a lot of restoration work done but this church was peaceful and calm.
It also had some unique wood working pieces.
There was a display about two brothers who at one time had been at this place. One was Fray Bernardino de Sahagun who work in the America's, particularly Mexico. He wrote 4 books which were confiscated by the king. He is also known as the father of America's anthropology.
The second was Friar Pedro Ponce de Leon who developed and taught sign language to the deaf and dumb.

Arch of Saint Benedict 1662.
Royal Monastery of St Benedict. Sahagun was the centre for the Benedictine monks.
The church of San Tirsu
Monastery of St Peter de Las Duenas. This the church attached to the monastery we stayed in. I went to mass and then had a pilgrim's blessing here.
Receiving the Pilgrim's blessing. This alter piece was so over done as well as had so much dust on it it was hard to see the colours.
King Alfonso VI of Leon.
